Still Loafing....

Loafers are a fall mainstay, inevitably a result of the slower pace in the latter months of the calendar year. We are at the top of a new year, peaking into spring, and I still love LOAFERS! There is something to be said about the element of surprise. The total shock of finding something unexpected gets your blood pumping, and when I ran across the vintage shop, Ampersand, on Larchmont Blvd in L.A. that's exactly what happened. I have passed the place a million times, but not until this day did I venture in. The store is quaint, neat and organized. Messy stores are repulsive, and I generally find my way out before I find anything worth withstanding the visual chaos. This store carried a good mix of high and low vintage treasures. There were some star pieces including a black and white Burberry trench, a black silk Chanel blouse, a tomato-red Gucci canteen style bag and a pair of classic nude Manolo Blahnik mary janes....all in my size!...mixed with clean silhouette staples and unique works of fashion art. Courtney was on hand, patiently addressing client questions and pointing out some less than obvious gems. I left the shop without doing major damage, but I can't guarantee that the next visit will end the same. Happy hunting!

Every year I say I am really going to blog this year....and once again, that task is on my list for 2012. Content is king, and I have a new appreciation, a renewed interest, and a real commitment to providing stylish content that is congruent with my philosophy on living. 2011 BET Awards with Estelle & Cymphonique

I had the opportunity to work with two artists for the 2011 BET Awards, Estelle and Cymphonique. Estelle exudes elegance in a beaded Naeem Khan gown and David Yurman jewelry. Cymphonique, pictured with her big brother, Romeo, and father, Percy "Master P" Miller, sparkles in a sequin and stud adorned Nicole Miller dress and Damiani jewels.

Please join Fashion Group International of Los Angeles, Inc (FGI LA) for our annual, fabulous comprehensive presentation of the ready-to-wear fashion trends from the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 designer runways of New York, London, Milan and Paris. The collections are interpreted by the Fashion Group RTW Committee headed by Mary Lou Luther and presented in a spectacular comprehensive audio-visual presentation. Swamped...but never too busy for SWEETS!!!

I have been crazed with schoolwork (design education never stops) and prepping the costumes for an upcoming feature, Speed Dating. With every waking hour occupied by these major undertakings, family and traveling to the 1001 wedding or new baby festivities that I have had to attend this year (sigh) it is difficult to find new bits that excite me. However I am NEVER too swamped for SWEETS!!!!! Working with style consultant and designer behind the ultra-hip Street Chic accessory line (http://www.streetchicbyjesszaino.com/), Jess Zaino, I bumped into a little jewel of a bake shop. Vanilla is a haven of melt in your mouth cupcakes and other sweet treats. My favorites are the passion fruit mini cupcakes and french macaroons! I actually dream about these things! The light, flaky exterior houses an ooey, gooey, chewy center of vanilla, berry, coffee, chocolate or one of the other feature flavors! Doesn't it sound exciting??? Almost worth the extra thigh-meat that I am sure to grow as a result of my new found indulgence!!!!

I've been swamped with work and school....and neglecting my blog, but I did find time to get hooked on a new show, the Chef Jeff Project, on the Food Network. Chef Jeff has taken 6 at-risk youth to teach them the art of food! Yum!!! If they finish the kitchen bootcamp they will be awarded with a 2-year scholarship to a culinary institute. Now that's hot! Obama-bilia!!!

I know it has been a while, but I have been in NY participating in fashion week festivities. I have never really enjoyed fashion week, but participation is advised when you're scratching your way to the top of the fashion food chain. There were so many interesting points (I'll feature some highights into the blog as they relate to other issues) but the most striking trend that I observed is Obama-bilia. The presidential race is increasingly creeping into new aspects of our life, but this one is moving to me. I am of the belief that you don't have to compromise intellect to be fashionable, and the trend of subtly incorporating political support accessories is fabulous! It helps that I am seeing more of this practice among Barack Obama supporters....being one myself as a former resident of Chicago, IL, advocate for higher education, and general fan of ideas that make sense. Now the news is trying to make Sarah Palin a fashion icon.....whoa Nelly! Icon....now that's fashion blaspheme! This just goes to show how style commentary should be left to the experts;-) Check out a pic of my friend, David....he's so hip and a quintessential example of how to make a statement without trying too hard. Glam God with Vivica Fox Premiers

Well the secret is out of the bag. The new VH-1 reality show, Glam God with Vivica Fox, has debuted. 12 stylists converge in a downtown LA loft to compete for the title of Glam God, $100k, a contract with an agency, and the chance to style an A-list celebrity for a red carpet event. Sounds exciting! It was. The cast east of the Rockies (Matt, Indashio, Tigerlily, Handry) had a pre-premier fete in NYC on Wednesday, and the LA cast (moi, Jess, Chris, Bo, Preston, Joachim) gathered for a premier screening. Yes I am ON the show...not just working behind the scenes. The images from the NY event lead me to believe it was a good night. Thursday's party was wonderful...not about Hollywood drama, ego or pretense, but genuine support! The people more than filled the space to see the first episode of the show, meet the cast, and revel in our moment. Everyone looked stylish...and of course camera ready;-) Apparently the panel had a party that we weren't invited to, but it didn't matter because we couldn't have asked for more love than our family, friends, colleagues and some media;-D could offer. My team won the first challenge...yay team! I know I didn't say much...or so it appeared, but that means there were fewer opportunities to embarrass my mother or come off like the mad stylist. Welcome to my blog, Life in Style......(audience applause.) I have wanted to share my thoughts on the subject for some time, without the reigns of an editor guiding my typing fingers, but everbody has dues...and bills...to pay. It is amazing how differently you look at things when you have to see it through someone else's eyes. Well this is all about my eyes....with and without my stylish Beryll shades (www.beryll.com)... and how I process what I see in the worlds of fashion, interiors and entertaining. Be patient with me. I can be a bit like a prism. My writings will probably reflect my different faces....not in a multiple personality disorderly way, but I have been told I can be moody.
